About This Event
Participants will develop a foundational understanding of educator residency and apprenticeship models and identify the core components necessary for successful program design and implementation.
Educator residencies and registered apprenticeships are increasingly recognized as effective strategies for recruiting, preparing, and retaining high-quality educators. In this session, participants will explore the foundational principles of these "earn-and-learn" models and examine how they address educator workforce challenges while creating more equitable pathways into the profession. Through the lens of The Residency Lab's 10 Characteristics of Effective Residencies, participants will learn the key components that distinguish strong residency and apprenticeship programs and gain access to free tools, resources, and planning supports available through The Residency Lab.

Residency Specialist
Dr. Carol Battle, a Residency Specialist at The Residency Lab, is a 20+ year veteran of public education. Her experiences as “the one” African-American student and teacher in most of her academic settings have shaped and driven her pursuits in equity and diversity issues.
Dr. Rebecca Hatkoff
Director, Teacher Education, Claremont Graduate University
Rebecca Hatkoff, PhD, is a consultant, researcher, teacher, and freedom dreamer. Through Possibilities Unbound, she collaborates with districts, teacher preparation programs, nonprofits, and community organizations to develop reciprocal partnerships, love-soaked practices, and humanizing systems that serve and honor students, educators, and communities. As Director of Teacher Education at Claremont Graduate University (2023–25), Rebecca launched five teacher residency partnerships co-designed as enduring infrastructure for districts and teacher preparation programs. Through her former consultancy Joyful Disruption, she provided PD across LA County, including working with 1,000+ educators in LAUSD's Community Schools Initiative.
